The Submergence of Surrender

Deep heart thirst that can’t be quenched
Soul sickness longing to be drenched with healing rain
Ideas of submerged flesh emerging washed, cleansed, liberated
Wholeness comes in the drowning

We pray for the crashing of waves to overtake us
Ocean depths of yearning that has become all consuming
Yet we refuse to expel the breath from our lungs that will allow us to plunge
Self-willed lips pressed tightly so that the air does not escape

At best, we stay afloat in mediocrity
High tides of striving flesh break over our weary heads
Causing us to paddle against the current
And still we gulp stagnant air as we ready ourselves for the white-crested crash

Oh but once the sweet surrender has come
And we sink headlong into the waters of His radiant glory
We find what we thought was impossible is in reality the only existence that’s true
Liberation and joy that abides in extravagant love and is available for all who will but dive
