“Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure – for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.” Revelation 19:7-8
There is nothing within us that has any merit of righteousness on our own. However, when we are truly in Christ, we have exchanged our lives for His, so we stand wearing His righteousness and His alone which is perfect, spotless, and pure. It is precisely at this point that we need renewal in our minds moment by moment if we are going to walk in the victory wrought for us at the cross. It is here that we must remember that we have put off the old man with his prideful ways and have put on the new which grants to us true holiness and liberty.
Then why do we struggle so deeply to believe these things to be true? I think there are two things that are deeply connected. One is that we have not truly entered the Lord’s rest. We have been brought into true saving faith, but we fall back to our fleshly ways of trying to please God through our own perfectionism which will never reach the measure of righteousness required and reminds us of our utter failure to be able to walk with the Lord in this manner. “Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?” Gal 3:3
And second, is the antidote to the first, we dont cry out for the Holy Spirit to possess us fully. We dont really want the fullness of God. We want the results of the fullness, but not the sacrifice – ourselves.
We wonder why we struggle with the same spiritual battles over and over and find no victory when the scripture clearly says that the victory is ours. If this is you today, agree with me in prayer…because I promise you, this is my heart’s cry tonight:
“Arise, O Lord, and go to your resting place, you and the ark of your might. Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let your saints shout for joy.” Psalm 132:8-9
Lord, we want to wear the mantle that you have fashioned for every believer – one of holiness and purity. We want to be cloaked in the presence of Your precious Holy Spirit so that your kingdom authority is fashioned upon us like a shield. Whatever can be accredited as righteous acts only come as we give ourselves over in surrender and allow your life to break forth within. Everything else is just filthy rags.
I am tired of being reminded of my own insecurities and fears. My life is now hidden in Christ. He has given me everything I need to accomplish His purposes. He has torn the veil so that I can live in the love of the Father who longs for me to enter into His presence. When we are blanketed in the sweet presence of the Lord, he enables us to bask in the glory of the light of his face. We have no light within ourselves, but as we partake of Him, He shines through us. Although we are hidden in His presence, we are shining beacons on a hill for the world to see His glory through us.
This is the way we prepare ourselves for the marriage supper of the lamb. We give ourselves over to the righteousness of God through the power of the Holy Spirit so that He can make ready a people…a people who have allowed the Kingdom to come forth in their lives so that they can be clothed in their fine linen as they dine with the King in eternity.
